Diabetes and Hyper- or Hypo-glycemia
A brief description The human body's primary energy source is glucose. Glucose is a by-product of the metabolic process and is carried to the cells by the bloodstream. A person's "blood sugar" is the measure of glucose present in the blood at a given time. Insulin is the hormone that "unlocks" the body's cells, allowing glucose to enter and fuel them (diabetes.org, Nov. 2007). When a person's body fails to produce insulin, and/or fails to use it properly, blood sugar levels can become extremely high (hyperglycemia). Diabetes is a disease characterized by persistent hyperglycemia. Hypoglycemia occurs when a body's blood sugar becomes too low; this can be a side effect of diabetic medications, but does occur in non-diabetics as well. In most cases, these conditions can be controlled by closely planning and managing meals, getting regular exercise and properly using insulin or other medications when prescribed by a physician. How we can help If you've been diagnosed with one of the following conditions, there is an excellent chance that you can live a normal, active life if you responsibly manage your condition. However, you may feel that you need some extra support in making or keeping a management schedule that suits your lifestyle. Or maybe your difficulty lies in making the necessary lifestyle changes these health conditions can require. Perhaps you are wondering how to protect yourself from the side effects of diabetes, such as a compromised immune system, extreme fatigue or feelings of depression.
