Fibromyalgia

Statistics show that between 3 and 6% of the U.S. population suffers from fibromyalgia (FM).  Women are most often affected, but men and children have been known to have FM.  The exact cause of FM is unknown, but researchers believe it is brought on by a dysregulation of neuroendocrine / neurotransmitter functions in the central nervous system.  Fibromyalgia can seriously affect one's life, relationships, work and interests.  Common symptoms include:
  • chronic, widespread pain that affects various parts of the body;
  • hyper-sensitivity in specific areas of the body when pressure is applied;
  • extreme fatigue and problems achieving deep, restorative sleep;
  • depression, irritable bowel syndrome, headaches, facial pain, numbness or tingling in the hands and feet, dizziness, impaired memory and/or concentration, dry mouth and eyes, anxiety, and others.
While many prescription and over-the-counter medications exist to alleviate symptoms of fibromyalgia, studies are now being conducted into the effectiveness of complementary and alternative methods of treatment (CAM).  While CAM methods have existed for centuries, modern studies are only now beginning to clinically research their benefits.  In its section on FM, the Mayo Clinic (http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/fibromyalgia/DS00079/DSECTION=11) currently mentions certain CAM treatments as being beneficial to those who suffer chronic pain and stress.  Immune Recovery and Wellness offers the following services to assist people living with fibromyalgia:
